Another win for the unbeaten Redlegs, but for the first time in season 1930 they had to work hard for it right to the final bell.

Melbourne led at every change, but the margin was never extensive and the two sides put on a titanic battle. Fitzroy were brave, and looked like a side likely to challenge for the four, but they were beaten despite hitting the lead in the last quarter.

It took until 'time off' for Melbourne to wrest the lead back.

Warne-Smith and the forward combination of Taylor, Vanthoff, Margitich were Melbourne's best.
