Against the defending premiers, the Fuschias debuted a number of new players and jumped to an early lead. It was not to last, after former Blue Bert Parke suffered a head knock in a collision with Vin Coutie his influence on the game ended and the Blues slammed on 5.6 to nothing in the second term to blow the game away.
The Argus newspaper described the second quarter blitz, "Carlton romped over the Reds - never gave them a chance to score a point. They were superior in height, superior in weight - had a ruck which was always able to do much more than hold its own; were almost supreme on the wings; and, to add to their many advantages, were handled by a cool, watchful leader, who never let them miss a point for want of direction.Melbourne stuck to a hopeless task gamely, and the play, always fast, was occasionally on the rough side, with one or two incidents that may possibly be the subject of further inquiry"
Carlton ran away with the game from there, amongst a number of spiteful incidents. Their fast start, and willingness to use their brawn no match for the reigning league champions.
