In a match played in heavy rain, Melbourne led by 11 points early in the last quarter before four last quarter goals from Tony Lockett kept St Kilda's finals hopes alive going into a last round bye. At first the visitors were better in the conditions, keeping Melbourne to one goal before half time in the worst weather of the season, before the Demons decided to kick the ball forward at all costs. They only had 12 handballs in a third term where they kicked four goals to one and grabbed the lead.
The Saints were in danger after conceding the first goal of the last quarter, before Lockett's intervention. After his second goal a seemingly quick reply from Allen Jakovich was ruled out for pushing future Demon Jamie Shanahan.
Much of the Saints' fate was left in Melbourne's hands, as they were playing fellow top six contender Hawthorn in the last round. The Demons lost, but Carlton were also beaten, meaning St Kilda made the six on percentage,
Best for Melbourne were Glenn Lovett, Garry Lyon and Jim Stynes.
