In the last match of a disappointing season, Melbourne's weaknesses in the ruck and forward line tripped them up yet again. The quality of the game was affected by a strong breeze blowing directly across the ground, and the margin could have been greater if South hadn't missed so many shots on goal.
The home side, who were also playing their last game for the season, were far superior from the first bounce and took advantage of Melbourne failing to play with any sort of teamwork - and though the visitors kicked one goal for the quarter they spent most of it defending.
South were even more dominant in the second, and with Melbourne's players going through the motions they kicked five goals to a point to build a match-winning lead.
Melbourne improved in the third quarter but the second had ruined any chance they had of victory. They kicked three of their five goals for the day in the quarter - all through Best. Both sides went through the motions in the final term and the season ended with South narrowly extending their lead and registering an easy victory.
Arthur Best kicked Melbourne's entire score of 5.5. He then joined the army and never played again. It was the last time any Melbourne player kicked all the side's goals.
Best, McKenzie and Incigneri were Melbourne's top players.
