Melbourne had not won a game at Victoria Park since 1921 - and before that not since 1912 - and they went closer than ever before.

The Reds might have won if spearhead Ron Baggott had kicked better than 4.9, but as it was their stirring last quarter comeback was impressive enough considering they no longer had anything to play for since Richmond ended their slim hopes of playing finals a week earlier. They gradually gained control of the ruck and their forwards were in better form than the opposition.

Baggott had been 1.8 at one point, but he went some way to restoring his reputation but kicking a goal on the bell which tied the scores from a tight angle. Despite his inaccuracy he was Melbourne's best player.

Foster was 19th man.
