Melbourne had been poor in losing the first of their sectional round games against Collingwood on the previous Saturday, but were well beaten against Fitzroy who were playing for the right of challenge to the premiership.
While the visitors were playing a loose game Fitzroy's teamwork, speed advantage and high-marking helped them to dominate after a goalless first quarter. Melbourne didn't have a shot on goal between a 'poster' in the second quarter and late in the final term.
Even though they could only manage two points Melbourne weren't totally disgraced, but the loss officially ended any hope they had of challenging for the flag.
Best were Lewis, V. Cumberland and Wood.
