An otherwise meaningless end of season clash between two of the competitions worst sides was enlivened by a titantic struggle in the last term.
Four goals in the first quarter for Corey McKernan put the Blues, and Corey, on track for a big day at the office. He barely got another touch for the rest of the day. Seven goals in total for the Blues gave them a fifteen point lead. Their tall forward line stretched the Demons but as the match wore on it was Melbourne's running brigade who took control.
Still the Demons were 33 points behind 18 minutes into the third quarter, and had only brought the margin back to 26 points at the last change.
Cameron Bruce and Adem Yze, having spent most of their day in defence, had fresh legs in the last term and when thrown into the centre they ran the Blues off their legs. Bruce kicked two goals, and was well supported by Walsh, McDonald, Ward and Heffernan. Carlton's prime move Scott Camporeale, on the other hand, was out of gas and without too many helpers.
The Demons hit the lead and held on to win. It would be their last win for the year.
Best were Neitz, Yze and Robertson
