After two disappointing losses in a row since Fred Fanning was suspended, Melbourne held an inaccurate Carlton to just four goals for the day to record their fifth win of the season.
The Blues were fighting for a spot in the top four, while Melbourne's only remaining business for the year was to avoid finishing in the bottom four - and thanks to Carlton's terrible kicking for goal they managed to get the win.
