A third straight big win for the Demons further solidified their position at the top of the table with four matches to play. They were poor until half time, but showed improvement later in the match to win comfortably.

In the first quarter Melbourne's misdirected kicking gave the visitors a number of chances, but Geelong was only able to capitalise with a 14 point lead. The sides went goal-for-goal early in the second as Melbourne struggled to come to terms with high wind and heavy ground, before two goals in a row levelled the scores. The visitors hit back to take the lead again, before two Mueller goals came from defensive errors to give the home side the lead at the half.

Three goals early in the second quarter to Norm Smith tilted the game in Melbourne's favour, and they opened a 21 point lead at the last quarter. The final term was all Melbourne, four early goals finished Geelong off and they kicked seven to two for the quarter.

Best were Beames, Heale and Mueller. Dowsing replaced La Fontaine (injured leg) in the last quarter. 19th man was Dowsing.

It was Melbourne's seventh win in a row, extending their lead on second placed Richmond to around 8%.
