Before the match the now famous Tiger theme song was unveiled for the first time, but the Richmond players didn't get to sing it after the siren despite being well in the mix at three-quarter time.
After a tense first quarter punctated by a number of physical clashes, the sides were level on 4.1 apiece at the first break. The Demons took a 22 point lead into half time, but Richmond sparked and were in front deep into the third term before a Tassie Johnson goal restored a three point lead at the last change.
Richmond blew the first chance to grab the lead back at the start of the last, and didn't kick a goal for the term. Melbourne used their superior physicality to add three goals and went on to win comfortably, even without Barassi and Dixon, away on state duty.
Leahy, Roet and Crompton were best. Laidlaw replaced Lord, who injured his thigh after crashing into the fence, in the second quarter and Matthews replaced Townsend (injured leg) in the last quarter.
