In terrible conditions the sides slugged through mud and splashing water until the locals ran away with victory in the last quarter. At first in a crowded game Melbourne were better handling the ball, but the home side turned out to be smarter when they decided to kick it along the ground instead and the two first quarter goals were the only majors the Reds managed all day.

Cordner got the first goal of the day for Melbourne but it was soon neutralised. By half time the Roys were a goal in front, and no goals were scored in the third term. Weakened by an injury to Sowden the Red defence crumbled in the final term and allowed Fitzroy to take the four points.

Conquest, Anderson and Leith were best.
