After having had a dirty day across the first three quarters Collingwood captain Des Tuddenham got his side home with a blistering last quarter.
Melbourne had wiped out a 27 point margin within 12 minutes of the third quarter beginning, with Ray Biffin kicking three goals in four minutes to drag them back into the match. At the other end the Pies went 17 minutes without a score but it was ironically Biffin who missed two easy shots to put them in front.
With time almost gone Graham Osborne lined up for a shot to put the Demons in front but the bail sailed out on the full and the Pies ran the clock down.
The loss left the Demons a game and percentage outside the five.
Best were Biffin, Fowler and Flower. Tony Sullivan and Rod Oborne were reported by a goal umpire for striking each other during the second quarter but found not guilty. Ray Smith was replaced by Guy at half time and McKellar by Grambeau in the last quarter.
