Entering the match as red hot favourites after a week off for the split round the Demons welcomed back state players Ron Barassi and Tassie Johnson but had had to fight with their lives to escape with the four points against a determined Carlton side.
In took until the dying moments of the third quarter for the home side to finally kick away, booting three quick goals to stead the lead. Carlton's wasteful kicking performance of 0.9 in the last quarter - and 1.13 in the second half as a whole - cost them any chance to win the game.
With the returning Bob Johnson - coming back from a rest - down on form at centre half-forward Carlton's big men had been the driving force behind repeat attacks on goal but were either kept out by Melbourne's dogged defence or ruined the good work by missing their chances. In the second half the side was reshuffled, with Clyde Laidlaw back into his familiar centre half-forward role and Johnson moved to the ruck - Laidlaw immediately had an impact and helped unlock Carlton's defence.
Still holding a lead in the third quarter a defence mistake gifted Bob Turner his only goal of the game, and from two points behind they took the lead and opened up a 12 point gap in the last quarter. Carlton wouldn't go away and had plenty of shots in the last quarter but couldn't make them count.
The win saw Melbourne retain their position at the top of the table.
Thorogood, Ridley and Barassi were Melbourne's best. Beckwith (broken hand) was replaced by Pinfold at half time.
