After two defeats in a row saw them drop out of touch with the top eight the Demons had a week off for State of Origin games. They returned to club competition with a chance to revive their year but suffered a shock defeat at the hands of the Dockers and Tony Modra.
Fremantle notched up their first win at the MCG at their 11th attempt, led by Modra who had seven goals at half time and kicked 10 for the match. It was a rough night for Jamie Shanahan in his 150th AFL match. Jeff White also struggled against his old side, beaten handily by Daniel Bandy.
The Dockers had five goals on the board in the first eleven minutes and it looked like Melbourne's run to the Preliminary Final in 1998 had been an aberration.
Best for Melbourne were Viney, Schwarz and Leoncelli. Adem Yze was charged with striking but found not guilty.
