Just a week after comprehensively thrashing Essendon on the back of 11 goals from George Margitich the third placed Fuschias totally collapsed at Punt Road and were thrashed.
Having also beaten Carlton a fortnight earlier, the visitors went in hot favourites but played like a team of juniors, never realistically troubling the Tigers who had their easiest afternoon of the year.
Melbourne had been forced to make two changes just before the game, Col Deane and Geoff Frood replacing Ray Usher and George Margitich. Frood became one of the rare VFL/AFL players to have played just one game but kicked multiple goals.
His performance was one of the rare highlights of a side that had eight leading players out of the team due to injury. They fumbled the ball all day, made mistakes in front of goals and rarely played to position.
The first quarter didn't give any hint of Richmond's easy win to come, in a hard scramble they were a better side. Two goals at the end of the quarter gave them a three goal lead, and they went on with it from there. Melbourne had chances in the second quarter but ruined other good chances with poor forward play.
Best were Johnson, Wittman and Collins.
