Sitting on the edge of the top four, half a game behind fourth placed Essendon, Melbourne started the second half of the year with a thrilling victory.
Despite greasy conditions following heavy rain and ongoing drizzle the sides put on a grandstand match, where neither side was more than a goal in front at any of the changes. The game was fast and even, with players content to kick along the ground instead of trying to play the traditional game. Richmond had slightly the best of the first term, taking a two point lead into quarter time.
With Richmond getting on top in the second quarter Melbourne adopted 'more rugged measures' and met Richmond with hard bumps. They used handball to score goals, and while the Tigers booted three they could have had more but failed many times in front of goal.
During the third quarter Melbourne's defence held Richmond out for most of the term, before two quick goals for the Tigers at the end of the last quarter gave them the advantage. They held it for most of the quarter before slowing due to four injured players, and allowing the Fuschias to storm home and win via a lucky snap out of the pack by George Cassidy in the dying moments.
Richmond had a final chance to win, and were within distance of their goal when the final bell rang. Many players had to be assisted off the ground at the end, with the conditions and the game taking a heavy toll on them.
Esposito, Collins and Green were best. Melbourne won the free kick count 56 to 38.
The win pushed Melbourne in front of Essendon and into fourth place on the ladder.
