After two close losses in a row Melbourne welcomed Essendon to the MCG and turned in a terrible performance. The "Same Old" had been out of form on field, and going through turmoil about a proposed move to Arden Street off it, but easily accounted for their hosts to keep their chances of a top four appearance alive.
The two sides had drawn in the opening match of the season and Melbourne had shown encouraging early form, but this was their third straight loss and all but ended any chance they had of making the finals for the first time since 1915.
Despite two losses in a row Melbourne started favourite, and after an even first half were just nine points down. From there Essendon ran away with the match, only Harry Harker showing any resistance up front.
Best were Chadwick Thomas, and Flanagan.
