Pursued by a number of clubs as a 17-year-old before the 1977 season, Young joined Carlton and played in their 1979 premiership side in his 22nd senior game.
When opportunities at the Blues dried up, he joined Melbourne for 1981 as part payment along with Vin Catoggio for Greg Wells, who had joined the Blues midway through the previous year.
Young spent all of 1983 in the Reserves before being axed by the Demons at the end of the season, leaving without a win in his 15 career matches. He was sold to Essendon alongside Tony Elshaug for the 1984 season but did not manage another senior game and retired.
