Remained on the list in 1980 but spent the year in the Reserves. Relegated to the supplementary list in 1981 and again didn't play a senior game. He was linked to Tasmanian side Clarence in early 1982 but instead played for WAFL side Perth, after being cleared to them by Claremont. He played seven games for the year and despite returning to Melbourne and playing Reserves the next year Whitfort didn't play another senior VFL game.
