Recruited to play in the Seconds after being one of the best amateur players in the 1948 national carnival, Rollason was also sought by St Kilda and South Melbourne. Originally from Saints territory, he was finally able to join Melbourne for the 1949 season after residing in their area for three seasons.
He immediately impressed as a defender when he broke into the senior squad but soon found himself at the other end of the ground.
With the side struggling to find a full-forward during 1950 pre-season training, Rollason requested a trial in the position and booted ten and eleven goals over two practice matches. The following week he was opposed by gun full back Shane McGrath and still managed four. Selected to play as the spearhead in the Round 1 match against Carlton he kicked six in his sixth game and it appeared that the search for a star forward had come to an end. Rollason played for the VFL Seconds in a representative game that year.
The next week he booted another five, but was held goalless in the third game of the year and kicked just one in the fourth before being dropped. He returned for one more game, but late in the year went to England for a business trip and didn't play VFL football again.
In 1953 he played for Old Melburnians. He made the St. Kilda final list in 1954 but failed to play a game and at 1956 was back at Old Melburnians. He was named the full back in their Team of the Century.
His father Neville played five games for Geelong in 1921 and 1922.
