Originally started his career at Carlton and vice-captained their Thirds to flags in 1948 and 1949. When he became old enough to play senior football he was residentially tied to the Demons and reluctantly transferred there in 1950. Melbourne refused to clear him to the Blues. He made his debut the next season, and was lightly played over four seasons after that.

Robinson's best season was his first, where he played 14 matches as a key defender, and received four Brownlow Medal votes despite only appearing in one win. The pacy defender missed the 1952 pre-season as he concentrated on professional running and didn't play a senior match for the season. An attempted comeback was thwarted in 1953 by injured ankle tendons, which prompted Robinson to retire. He returned to pre-season training in 1954 but didn't play another game for the club.

He made a comeback with Carlton at the end of 1954. The Blues had sought a clearance for his return in 1953 but were again refused. He didn't make his debut with the Blues until 1956 and added just two more senior games.
