After training with Melbourne in mid-1950, the younger brother of Denis, Don and Ted Cordner briefly played for the Demons in 1951. He became the only of the brothers not to play in a premiership side. His debut was delayed by a foot injury in the last practice match.
He was described at the time as being of a "heavier build" than his brothers, with more pace and a more aggressive game. At the time of his invitation to join the Demons, Cordner was opening the bowling for the University cricket club with brother Denis. He later went on to represent Victoria in cricket.
Cordner played six games for the Demons as a ruckman. After being cut from Melbourne's list before the 1952 season he went on to pursue a career in nuclear science. During his time studying in England he played one first class cricket match for Warwickshire against India.
