Debuting as an 18-year-old in the first round of 1989, after playing in the pre-season premiership, Ahern played the first two games of the season but by Round 8 he was back in the Under 19s and never played another VFL match. After injury prevented the ruckman from playing any further senior games in 1990, he was traded to North Melbourne in exchange for National Draft selection #75, but didn't add to his tally in 1991.
In 1992 Ahern spent a season at Port Adelaide before coaching at Hamilton and Mortlake. He also coached Albert Park amateur football club in 2003 and served as an assistant to Andy Lovell at Sandringham before moving full time into the business of owning pubs.
