The returned serviceman had enlisted in the Army in December 1915 and spent time in the 37th Battalion.

Played three games as a forward in 1920, and remained at the club in 1921 but didn't play another senior game.

He later served as Mayor of Heidelberg, and in 1949 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as Labor member for Clifton Hill. O'Carroll served as member for the seat until 1955.
