Linked to Melbourne in late 1912, Woolley instead joined Essendon the next year. He played eight times for them in his first season before being cleared to Melbourne after the opening round of 1914. He debuted a few weeks later but played only two matches with his new club before being cleared to VFA side Hawthorn before Round 1, 1915.

Woolley joined Carlton in 1918 where he added another 12 games to his VFL career over two seasons.

He also served as a policeman during his career.
