Follower who played in 1934 practice games, and was recruited to the Seconds late in 1935 before making his debut the next year.

Furniss was a member of the 1939 premiership team before being called up to the Air Force after Round 1, 1940. He played a game with SA side North Adelaide during the season but was injured. He returned for four VFL games late in the season, including the Preliminary Final but his form disappointed due to lack of time to train around his RAAF duties and he was dropped for the Grand Final.

From there his service in the RAAF caused him to miss 1941 to 1946 before returning for two games in 1947. He had been persuaded to rejoined the club as Seconds captain at the start of that year.

During the war Furniss played in the ACT, and in 1941 won the Mulrooney Medal for best player in the Canberra competition while playing for Fairbairn.
