Debuted for Norwood in 1965 and played there until 1969 for 76 games in total. After having their first three requests for a clearance refused by Molloy's club Norwood, Melbourne paid a huge transfer fee for the left footed ruck-rover and former Tassie Medal winner for best player in the interstate carnival.
However injuries and inconsistent form meant that he was rarely seen at the peak form which impressed observers at the 1969 carnival. Molloy displayed flashes of brilliance throughout his six seasons at the club, but like fellow high priced South Australian recruit John Tilbrook never fully justified the huge fee.
He played 15 games in his first season, and all 22 in 1971 despite suffering a depressed fracture of the cheekbone in a practice match against Port Adelaide.
After being a regular for his first three seasons a persistent thigh injury destroyed Molloy's 1973 season. He missed seven weeks with a thigh injury, then after returning through the Reserves was hurt again in his Round 14 comeback game and didn't play again for the rest of the year. The injury further restricted him to three games in 1974, and in total Molloy played just nine games in his last three years at the club.
He went to Ringwood as coach in 1976 and there was an uproar when Melbourne asked the amateur club for a $2,000 transfer fee. In 1982 he played a season of Reserves at Norwood aged 35.
His son Glenn played 20 games for Melbourne between 1993 and 1996.
