Constable was recruited after moving to the city to study chemistry. Originally a centreman, he was converted into a half-back flanker.

Constable played three games in a row in the middle of 1953, but battled ankle trouble in early 1954. He remained on the senior list in 1955, but did not play another game and moved to VFA side Preston from 1956 to 1958.
