The former firefighter replaced the departed Hedley Tomkins as Melbourne's number one rover in 1914 and played every match for the year. In the Round 6 game against Carlton he was voted best-on-ground in a game despite it later being diagnosed that he was suffering from measles.

Early in 1915 he left to join Bendigo City.
