Melbourne win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: R. Aitken 2, O'Bern 1, Baird 1, Dodds 1, Burns 1

Melbourne had won three in a row, but with the exception of a win against Essendon they had struggled against senior clubs since a June win over Hotham so a large crowd turned up to see if they could continue their good form against Carlton.

Earlier in the season Carlton had thrashed Melbourne in their first meeting, but the in-form reds managed to get some revenge with a narrow victory.

Carlton attacked first, but wasted their chance and had to turn back a Melbourne effort before getting the first goal of the game. Their lead didn't last long, as O'Bern equalised almost immediately from the restart. Carlton then threatened but conceded the second goal of the game to go into quarter time a goal behind.

Melbourne got the first goal of the second quarter, but the visitors struck back with the last two goals of the half to go into the break on level terms.

Each team had chances early in the third term, but it was Melbourne who goalled first through Dodds. The home side continued to hold the advantage, and R. Aitken got his second from a place kick to restore the two goal cushion by keeping Carlton goalless.

The Blues scored first in the last term, but Melbourne soon restored the two goal buffer for the third time and held on late when the Blues got within a goal.

Notes
Some sources have Melbourne on 5.5 at three quarter time
