Kangaroos win by 13 points
9pt goalkickers: Russell Robertson 1
6pt goalkickers: David Neitz 4, Russell Robertson 1, Aaron Rogers 1, Simon Godfrey 1, Cameron Bruce 1
A 20 point lead at half-time meant North were never seriously troubled. Adem Yze, playing with an achilles strain, was lively in the first half but faded away in the second while Guy Rigoni continued his long comeback from injury with a positive performance.
In a game with little to recommend it, Melbourne's new kids like Aaron Rogers, Ryan Ferguson and Mark Jamar put in positive performances, though Rogers would never play seniors for Melbourne. Ferguson, Johnstone and Neitz - who kicked all his goals in the second half - were Melbourne's best.
The win set up a clash between North and their disgraced captain Wayne Carey in the Cup semi-final, while Melbourne could only focus on round 1.
