A more experienced Tigers side turned the tables on the minor premiers and stormed straight into the 1970 Reserves Grand Final on the back of a seven goal haul from future Demon coach Neale Balme.
Richmond jumped to a two goal lead at the first change, but thanks to Paul Callery and Kelvin Clarke Melbourne were level twice in the second quarter. They were well beaten after the half-time break though and were forced into a Preliminary Final against North Melbourne.
Best were Callery, K. Clarke and Jones.
