Highest score in Round 11
After already having a bye in Round 8, the majority of Melbourne's players had another week off as the league paused for an interstate carnival. They returned two games outside the top six, in a shortened 20 match season where their finals aspirations were in grave danger. The Demons responded with a surprisingly easy win, thrashing a side three wins better off and well in the September hunt.
Allen Jakovich enjoyed his nine goal haul, patting Tony Francis on the backside after four, then doing a soccer-style arms-out airplane celebration after kicking his eighth off the ground. "I just like to show my emotions" he said after the game.
Best were G. Lovett, Stynes and Tingay. David Neitz was reported for striking Tony Francis with a forearm to the head during the first quarter but cleared after Francis testified to the Tribunal that he'd been tackled across the chest.
