Signed with Melbourne in 1980, but spent 1981 in Echuca while working in his family business. Joined the Demons in 1982 but had an injury interrupted season. He worked through the Reserves - where he was best and fairest in 1983 - to earn one senior game.
Castles remained on the list in 1984 but didn't add to his senior games total. Returned to Echuca in 1985 and played there through 1988.
