Called into the Fitzroy side in 1907 - against Melbourne - when they were struggling to field a team due to injuries, Sadlier kicked two goals but lost his place when able-bodied 'Roys players returned.

He re-emerged in VFL circles with Melbourne in 1910, again drafted into a side badly affected by injuries. Sadlier again lost his place the next week, and this time didn't play VFL football again.

He enlisted with the Army in August 1914 and served during World War I.
