Called into the Fitzroy side in 1907 - against Melbourne - when they were struggling to field a team due to injuries, Sadlier kicked two goals but lost his place when able-bodied 'Roys players returned.
He re-emerged in VFL circles with Melbourne in 1910, again drafted into a side badly affected by injuries. Sadlier again lost his place the next week, and this time didn't play another game for the season. He was cleared to Essendon in mid-1911 but didn't play a game for them.
He enlisted with the Army in August 1914 and served during World War I.
