With their premiership campaign having fallen apart in the previous month, Melbourne suffered another disappointing result.
Slippery turf didn't help their cause, and the game degenerated into a series of scrimmages with free kicks being paid liberally to both teams. Melbourne were also missing Lew Massey, Fred Sheahan and McKenzie from their best side.
In addition to their weakened side Melbourne's goal kicking may have cost them victory. They had seven shots within scoring range that either didn't make the distance or went out of bounds. St Kilda were in a similar position but didn't miss as many easy opportunities.
In the last 10 minutes both sides had a chance to kick the winning goal. St Kilda's Fitzpatrick missed a set shot for 10 yards out, and defender O'Halloran for Melbourne from even closer than that.
Best were Moysey, debutant Wardill and Christy. St Kilda later protested against Matt Honey, as they believed he had not been properly cleared from Richmond after playing there the year before.
