After opening their season with seven straight losses the Demons made it two wins in a row with a thrilling victory in front of a hostile Moorabbin crowd.

Ray Biffin returned to the side after injury and booted five goals, but in heavy winds the Saints were as many as 47 points ahead in the final term before the Demons charged home. A Greg Wells goal cut the margin to under a goal before a behind drew the Demons to a point behind. St Kilda had already drawn two games that year and when it Colin Graham lined up 60m from goal with the wind and little time left on the clock it looked like they were about to be involved in a third.

But Graham's kick, in a howling wind that not only came from behind him but was also cutting across the ground on an angle floated through and Melbourne were home.

Best were Biffin, Dullard and Fowler. Hutchison replaced Brewer and Baker replaced Smith, both in the last quarter.
