Melbourne were coming off two losses in a row, but narrowly shrugged off thier poor form with a hard fought victory.
Throughout the first half, Melbourne was on top, leading by 25 points at the long break. Converted defenders John Lord and Tassie Johnson were troubling the Saints, though Lord kicked 3.6, while St Kilda struggled up front.
St Kilda made it interesting with three goals in the last 10 minutes of the third quarter. They threw everything into the last quarter, and were within striking range in the last quarter, until Frank Adams - who had been unsighted all day - kicked the sealing goal.
Barassi, Lord and Rowarth were best. Terry Gleeson collapsed during the game, with what was initially thought to be a collapsed lung, he was replaced by Len Mann in the last quarter. Jenkinson was replaced by Dawson during the last quarter.
