Biggest loss and lowest score against Gold Coast
Melbourne took an unbeaten record against recent expansion teams into the match, but Gold Coast started favourite after early having won two matches for the season. The bookies got it right, as the Suns stormed to a five goal lead at quarter time and never looked back.
Melbourne struggled to score, and even when they did Gold Coast would respond easily. By three quarter time the margin was over 10 goals, and it was only the fact that the Suns lost three players midway through the term that allowed Melbourne to narrowly win the quarter in front of a tiny MCG crowd.
The Demons were second best all day, and were lucky not to get beaten by more in the end. Despite having 101 less possessions than their opponents Melbourne were also beaten 71-39 in the tackle count and the result heaped even more pressure on under fire coach Mark Neeld.
Best were Howe, Viney and Gawn. Aaron Davey was a late replacement for Tom McDonald (shoulder) and started as substitute before replacing Dean Kent during the third quarter.
Colin Sylvia was reported for high contact against Jared Brennan and suspended for three matches. Chris Dawes was reprimanded for striking Tom Murphy.
It was Melbourne's sixth worst attendance at the MCG since 1987.
