Aiming for their best start since 1965 after five straight wins to open the year Melbourne fell at the final hurdle. In front of the largest Home and Away crowd ever for a match between the two sides the Demons suffered their first defeat of the year.

North had lost two in a row after opening the year with three wins, but after coach Denis Pagan had put his side through a full-scale practice match during the week they entered the game with a more aggressive and intense attitude which unsettled the Demons.

Already missing Allen Jakovich through injury the Demons were further cruelled when Lyon, still recovering from playing State of Origin, was lost to an ankle injury before half time. Darren Kowal also suffered a shoulder injury.

Three goals to none in the third quarter helped tip the tight, low scoring game in North's favour before they took control. A brief rally in the last quarter got Melbourne back to within 20 points before North finished with three goals.

Best were Neitz, S. Febey and Viney.

Andrew Obst was suspended for a match for striking Dean Laidley and David King two matches for striking Steven Febey. Wayne Carey was cleared of attempting to gouge Sean Wight's eyes due to inconclusive video footage.
