Melbourne's best start to a season since 1965 came after an early struggle where the defending premiers took a 15-0 lead. Despite being outplayed early, the Demons reduced the margin to seven at quarter time, then piled on the next seven goals, stopping Richmond from kicking another until the third quarter.
Best were Salem, Petracca and Jackson. Petracca won the Checker Hughes medal for best on ground. Kade Chandler was unused medical substitute.
