The two sides had had vastly contrasting performances on the previous Saturday, with Melbourne breaking their duck for the season and the Maroons registering the first one scoring shot performance by a team since 1899 when they had kicked 1.0 against Footscray. This time the Roys got on top.
Melbourne kicked with the wind in the first quarter but did not take full advantage, conceding the first three goals. They got the last two of the term, but were wasteful with 2.5. The Maroons scored four goals to one in the second - including the last two - to take a 22 point lead into half time. Each side had equal use of the ball in the third term but Fitzroy were better at taking their chances. They kicked three each but Melbourne might have had more if they hadn't been so wasteful in their attacking play.
A reshuffle at the start of the last quarter put McMahen in the centre, and the moved helped the Demons launch a comeback that saw them take the lead with a few minutes left. The previous week it was Melbourne who withstood a late comeback to win, but this time they conceded two late goals to allow the Roys to leave the MCG with the points. The last goal came on the siren.
Best were Spencer, McMahen and Williams. Lane replaced Baker (injured) and Case at three quarter time and replaced Melville (injured) in the last term.
