At half time St Kilda were narrowly in front, but they followed up with a diabolical second half where they added just four behinds and let the game slip away. They had kicked with the wind in the first quarter, but repeated attacks were kept out by Melbourne's strong defence. When the Demons had their chance in the second term they kicked three goals to one to go into the break four points down.

Despite the victory Melbourne were hardly impressive, with their own forward play described as 'atrocious' but at least it got the defending premiers back into the winning circle after two straight defeats which threatened to derail their season. Neither side kicked a goal in the third quarter, before McKenzie put the Dees in front early in the final term. He also landed the fourth and sealing goal of the term, while St Kilda were scoreless.

The defences were best for their respective sides, and Melbourne's best players on the day were Denis Cordner, Deans and McGrath.

Alby Rodda was replaced at half time by John Dorgan. Rodda was feeling the effects of a car crash he'd been in on Thursday night. Dullard was the other reserve.

Jack Mueller, recalled to the senior side from his position as captain/coach of the Seconds, was reported for striking J. Meehan to the face and suspended for four matches.
