The Reds went into the match without Joe Pearce, who was 'in the country' a week after being chased by Carlton fans for knocking one of their players over. Fitzroy got the first goal, before Melbourne steadied and opened a three goal to one lead. They were unable to hold it, and both sides were level on three goals at the break.

Fitzroy ran away in the second, kicking three goals to one. The game was held up after a Harry Brereton miss landed in a nest of telephone wires outside the ground. Fans gathered to throw stones at the ball until it was dislodged and the game could continue. Later in the quarter the home side was awarded a controversial goal that was seen to bounce off another player's neck before going through.

Melbourne opened the game in the third quarter to try and counter Fitzroy's tight checking tactics but Fitzroy's defence was strong and they only lost a point off their lead in by the last change. Both teams started the last quarter listlessly and large numbers of the crowd left the game, satisfied that Fitzroy were far enough in front to win comfortably. They missed a strong comeback by the visitors. Fitzroy wasted time by regularly kicking the ball out of bounds and held on. The fast finishing visitors who had been let down by their rucks for the first three terms before everything clicked into place. Despite their loss Melbourne won the free kick count 29-24, and it was one of their best performances of the season.

Best were Hendrie, Monk, and Tomkins.
