Fresh off a win the previous week Melbourne welcomed the unbeaten Dockers to the MCG and though they never threatened victory the Demons managed to remain within striking distance for three quarters before Freo ran away with the game in the last quarter.
It looked like a thrashing was on the cards early when the visitors kicked the first four goals of the game within 15 minutes but Melbourne managed two goals late in the term to close the gap. They held firm in the second quarter and Fremantle only added one point to the lead but gradually pulled away in the third to open up a five goal lead.
In the last quarter the Dockers were rampant, kicking seven goals to none to record a comfortable win. Melbourne didn't help their own cause by booting 0.6.
Best were McDonald, Brayshaw and Michie. Jordie McKenzie replaced Christian Salem during the third quarter when Salem was concussed.
