Playing in the 10,000th match in VFL/AFL history, the Demons defied pre-season predictions that they would slide down the ladder by winning their fifth straight game and going on their own to the top of the table. They were challenged for the first two quarters, the home side responding to a blast from their coach the previous week to take it to their more fancied opponents. Only two goals from free kicks in front of goal gave Melbourne a break at the first change.

The visitors added a point to the lead in the second quarter before Brisbane began to show resistance. The Dees lost the lead just before half time but recovered to be in front at the break thanks to a rare goal from emergency forward Danny Hughes. That was all for Brisbane's challenge, four third quarter goals by Darren Bennett helped crush the Bears, blowing the margin out to six goals.

Best were B. Lovett, Bennett and Febey.
