In a game former Demon defender Wally Lock described as "dull" in The Argus, the visitors withstood a fine second quarter performance by the Bulldogs to register an easy victory. Melbourne had the use of the wind in the first quarter and opened up a six goal lead before the Bulldogs switched to a quick, handballing game which helped them overturn the lead. They then switched back to kicking it long which played right in the Demons hands.

Footscray got in front during the third quarter, but a late goals put Melbourne back in front at the long break. The margin was extended to 15 at the last change, but with the use of the breeze the Dogs were expected to come home strongly. The lead was down to seven before the visitors drove forward for Denis Cordner to kick a goal against the run of play. The Dogs then kicked another goal to cut the gap to six before McGovern kicked the sealer.

Len Dockett, usually found in defence, was his side's best when thrown up front and helping in the centre. Also amongst the best were Denis Cordner and Deans. Ken Carlon replaced Lance Arnold (injured leg) in the third quarter, and Heywood replaced Spencer (ankle) at three quarter time.

Donald Cordner missed the match with injury, his first absence in 144 games.
