Five years after their introduction, North remained the only of the recent entrants to the competition to have beaten Melbourne, and even then just once when the Redlegs were faltering en route to the finals in 1925. Having started the season in underwhelming fashion they were no match for Melbourne on paper and the Reds took home their fourth straight win to open the season.

The victory wasn't as comfortable as might have been expected given the relative position of the two clubs. Melbourne were never headed on the scoreboard but they couldn't kick away. It was a poor performance compared to their wins over Geelong and Fitzroy but nevertheless the points were in the bag.

Taylor, Warne-Smith and Usher were best.
