Two fighting wins in a row had opened Melbourne's season, but after dropping a close one against St Kilda they were outclassed by the Blues.
The visitors had the advantage of a slight breeze in the first quarter and attacked first but only managed a behind. Lord missed two further shots, leading to Carlton turning a kick-in into a goal at the other end. The Fuschias' disastrous start would have been even worse had it not been for Chadwick's strong defence. They recovered from Carlton's second to kick a reply immediately out of the middle, but five goals to two in the first quarter gave the home side a comfortable lead which they never surrendered.
Melbourne outscored the Blues over the next two quarters to cut the margin to under a goal at the last change and make it interesting. Carlton got the first of the second quarter but were outscored three goals to two overall before half time. Despite Melbourne's improvement on the scoreboard it was clear that Carlton's tactic of cramping the game was having an effect on their overall play. The margin got down to two before a free kick extended Carlton's lead. The Reds then got two of the last three to reduce the gap to two at the last change.
The game remained interesting for the first ten minutes of the last quarter but from there on the Blues stormed away with a five goal to none burst to take the points comfortably..

Herald says "at its maximum the crowd reached 20,000" and that 15,000 had been the crowd at the bounce.
