Two fighting wins in a row had opened Melbourne's season, but after dropping a close one against St Kilda they were outclassed by the Blues.

Five goals to two in the first quarter gave the home side a comfortable lead which they never surrendered. Melbourne outscored them over the next two quarters to cut the margin to under a goal at the last change and make it interesting

The game remained interesting for the first ten minutes of the last quarter but from there on the Blues stormed away with a five goal to none burst to take the points comfortably..
