Melbourne had been thrashed in Geelong two days before in a holiday game after failing to score in the second half, and they were barely much better in losing at home.
The game nearly wasn't played, with the VFL's Adverse Weather Committee not giving the go-ahead until noon due to heavy rain affecting grounds. The MCG was not as badly affected as some grounds but the stress of the game saw it end up in a terrible manner, described by one writer as resembling "semi-liquid soap" .The ball became slippery quickly, causing both teams to adopt soccer tactics instead of trying to pick the ball up.
Fitzroy took their chances better in the first half while Melbourne kicked behinds. The only portion of the game that the home side were on top was in the second quarter, but their kicking for goal was poor and they kicked 1.6 for the term. Fitzroy had no such problems in the third, booting three straight to set up a match-winning lead.
Best were McGinis, Parkin and McClelland.
